The concrete calculator is designed for estimating and planning concrete projects such as slabs, walls, columns, footings, stairs, and curbs.

This tool provides accurate measurements by considering length, width, depth, and quantity. You can also input the price to calculate the total volume and cost whether the price is per cubic foot, cubic yard, or cubic meter.

What Is Concrete?

Concrete is a construction material made by mixing cement, water, and aggregates such as sand, gravel, or crushed stone.

When water and cement combine, they form a paste that coats the aggregates and binds them into a strong, durable mass suitable for various structures.

Concrete Volume Formulas:

Here are the formulas for calculating concrete volume for different structures:

Square Slab:

square slab

$$ Volume\ (ft^3) = Height \times Length \times Width $$

Circular Slab:

circular slab

$$ Area\ (ft^2) = \pi \times \left(\frac{Diameter}{2}\right)^2 $$

$$ Volume\ (ft^3) = Depth \times Area $$

Wall:

wall

$$ Volume\ (ft^3) = Height \times Length \times Width $$

Square Column:

square column

$$ Volume\ (ft^3) = Height \times Length \times Width $$

Circular Column:

circular column

$$ Area\ (ft^2) = \pi \times \left(\frac{Diameter}{2}\right)^2 $$

$$ Volume\ (ft^3) = Height \times Area $$

Stairs:

stairs

  • Calculate the volume of each section individually, from the ground to the top.
  • Each section includes the platform and the steps.

Volume under the platform:

$$ Volume\ Under\ Platform\ (ft^3) = Width \times Platform\ Depth \times (Rise\ Height \times Number\ of\ Steps) $$

Volume under each step:

$$ Volume\ Under\ Each\ Step\ (ft^3) = Run\ Depth \times Width \times (Rise\ Height \times Step\ Number) $$

Total volume:

$$ Total\ Volume\ (ft^3) = Volume\ Under\ Platform + Volume\ Under\ Each\ Step $$

Gutters and Curbs:

gutters and curbs

Volume under the curb:

$$ Volume\ Under\ Curb\ (ft^3) = Curb\ Depth \times Length \times (Curb\ Height + Flag\ Thickness) $$

Volume under the gutter:

$$ Volume\ Under\ Gutter\ (ft^3) = Gutter\ Width \times Length \times Flag\ Thickness $$

Total volume:

$$ Total\ Volume\ (ft^3) = Volume\ Under\ Curb + Volume\ Under\ Gutter $$

Types of Concrete:

Different types of concrete and their densities:

Type Density (kg/m³)
Ordinary 2400
Light Weight <1920
High Density 3000-4000
Reinforced 2500
Precast 2400
Prestressed 2330
Air-Entrained 2535
Glass 2620
Rapid Hardening 2250
Asphalt 1950
Lime 2080
Roller Contracted 2400

How To Calculate Concrete?

Practical Example:

A contractor needs to make 5000 circular concrete slabs. Each slab has a 2 ft diameter and a 5-inch depth. How much concrete is required?

Solution:

Step 1: Convert depth to feet:

$$ Depth = \frac{5 \text{ inches}}{12} = 0.4167 \text{ ft} $$

Step 2: Area of one circular slab:

$$ Area\ (ft^2) = \pi \times \left(\frac{Diameter}{2}\right)^2 $$

$$ Area = 3.14 \times \left(\frac{2}{2}\right)^2 $$

$$ Area = 3.14 \ ft^2 $$

Step 3: Volume of one slab:

$$ Volume\ (ft^3) = Area \times Depth $$

$$ Volume = 3.14 \times 0.4167 $$

$$ Volume \approx 1.31 \ ft^3 $$

Step 4: Total concrete for 5000 slabs:

$$ Total\ Volume\ (ft^3) = 1.31 \times 5000 $$

$$ Total\ Volume \approx 6550 \ ft^3 $$

So, approximately 6550 cubic feet of concrete is required for 5000 circular slabs.
