ERA represents the average number of runs allowed per 9 innings. Here's an example calculation:
A pitcher has pitched 96 innings and 1 out, allowing 28 earned runs.
Solution:
Using the ERA formula:
ERA = [28 / (96 + 1/3)] × 9
ERA = (28 / 96.333) × 9
ERA = 0.29066 × 9
ERA = 2.616
A lower ERA indicates better pitching. An ERA under 2.5 in a standard 9-inning game is considered excellent.
Tim Keefe holds the record for the lowest single-season ERA in history. Pitching 105 innings for the National League’s Troy Trojans, his ERA was an astonishing 0.86, more than half a run lower than any other pitcher that season.
