This horsepower calculator estimates the power output of a vehicle using different calculation methods. It works on standard horsepower formulas and converts between various units.
What Is Horsepower?
Horsepower is a unit of power that measures the rate at which work is done. It is commonly used to describe engine output in vehicles. Two common types are:
- Mechanical (imperial) horsepower: 1 HP = 745.7 watts
- Metric horsepower (PS)
How to Calculate Horsepower?
Horsepower can be calculated using several methods—manually using formulas or via a calculator.
Elapsed Time (ET) Technique
This method uses the vehicle's weight and the elapsed time to cover a quarter-mile (402.3 meters):
- HP = Weight × (Speed ÷ 234)³
- Example: Weight = 50, Speed = 7 → HP ≈ 47.4 kW
Trap-Speed Technique
This method uses the vehicle weight and the trap speed (speed at the end of a quarter-mile):
- HP = Weight × (Speed)³ ÷ 234
- Example: Weight = 20, Speed = 30 mph → HP ≈ 0.2 kW
RPM & Torque Technique
This method calculates horsepower from engine RPM and torque:
- HP = (RPM × Torque) ÷ 5,252
- Example: RPM = 5,600, Torque = 350 ft·lb → HP ≈ 373.19 HP
