  • Overnight difference from the first time to the second
  • Overnight difference from the second time to the first

Definition of Time Span

"The time span is the difference in time between two different time periods."

You can also describe the time span as the difference in time between two events. You can compute the time difference in 12-hour or 24-hour format using this calculator.

How to Find Time Span

Measuring time span can be tricky, especially overnight. You can calculate the difference between two points by entering the values into the Time Span Calculator, which will give you an accurate result. For manual calculation, follow these steps:

  • Calculate the time between the start and end points by subtracting the starting time from the ending time, and vice versa.
  • Convert the time to 24-hour format to make calculations easier. For AM hours, keep them the same. For PM hours, add 12 to convert to 24-hour format. Example: 1:00 PM = 13:00.
  • Check which time has more minutes, the start or the end. Subtract accordingly:
    • If the ending time has more minutes, subtract the starting time from the ending time. Keep hours on the left and minutes on the right, separated by a colon (HH:MM).

Example 1:

Consider the first time is 9:22 and the second time is 13:57. How much time has passed between the two time spans?

  13:57
- 09:22
--------
   4:35

The answer is 4 hours and 35 minutes. The time hours calculator is handy to find such differences quickly.

Example 2:

Consider the first time is 9:58 and the second time is 13:57. How much time has passed between the two time spans?

In this case, the first time has a larger minute value, so we need to borrow 1 hour (60 minutes) from the hours to perform subtraction:

  12:117 (borrow 1 hour from 13, add 60 minutes to 57)
- 09:58
--------
   3:59

The answer is 3 hours and 59 minutes. When performing manual calculations, you need to transfer 60 minutes from the hours to minutes if the starting minutes are larger than the ending minutes. The timespan calculator does this automatically.
