Our accuracy calculator helps you measure how correctly a test, model, or measurement system performs. It supports multiple calculation methods and provides detailed step-by-step solutions so you can clearly understand how the accuracy result is obtained.

How to Calculate Accuracy?

Accuracy can be calculated in different ways depending on the context (diagnostic testing, statistical modeling, or experimental measurement). Below are the commonly used formulas implemented in this accuracy calculator:

1. Diagnostic Test Accuracy Formula:

Accuracy = (TP + TN) / (TP + TN + FP + FN)

Where:

  • TP (True Positive): Correctly identified positive cases
  • TN (True Negative): Correctly identified negative cases
  • FP (False Positive): Incorrectly identified positive cases
  • FN (False Negative): Incorrectly identified negative cases

New Example:

Suppose a medical test produced the following results:

  • TP = 45
  • TN = 40
  • FP = 10
  • FN = 5

Step 1: Add TP and TN → 45 + 40 = 85

Step 2: Add all values → 45 + 40 + 10 + 5 = 100

Step 3: Accuracy = 85 / 100 = 0.85 (85%)

2. Accuracy Using Sensitivity & Prevalence:

Accuracy = (Sensitivity × Prevalence) + (Specificity × (1 − Prevalence))

Where:

  • Sensitivity = TP / (TP + FN)
  • Specificity = TN / (TN + FP)
  • Prevalence = Proportion of affected individuals in the population

New Example:

  • Sensitivity = 0.80
  • Specificity = 0.90
  • Prevalence = 0.25

Step 1: (0.80 × 0.25) = 0.20

Step 2: (0.90 × 0.75) = 0.675

Step 3: Accuracy = 0.20 + 0.675 = 0.875 (87.5%)

3. Percentage Accuracy Error Formula:

Percent Accuracy Error = (|Vo − Va| / Va) × 100

Where:

  • Vo: Observed Value
  • Va: Accepted (True) Value

New Example:

  • Observed Value (Vo) = 52
  • Accepted Value (Va) = 50

Step 1: |52 − 50| = 2

Step 2: 2 / 50 = 0.04

Step 3: 0.04 × 100 = 4% error

Accuracy vs. Precision

Accuracy refers to how close a measurement or prediction is to the true or accepted value.

Precision refers to how consistent repeated measurements are with each other, regardless of whether they are close to the true value.

A system can be precise but not accurate, accurate but not precise, both, or neither.

FAQs

What does an accuracy rate represent?

The accuracy rate shows the proportion of correct predictions or measurements compared to the total number of cases. It is typically expressed as a percentage.

Is 100% accuracy possible?

While 100% accuracy is theoretically possible, it is rare in real-world applications due to measurement errors, variability, or unpredictable factors.

When should I use percentage accuracy error?

Percentage accuracy error is commonly used in laboratory experiments and physics calculations to determine how close an experimental value is to the accepted value.

Summary

The accuracy calculator is a practical tool for evaluating diagnostic tests, predictive models, and experimental measurements. By understanding the formulas and reviewing step-by-step solutions, you can confidently interpret accuracy results in various real-world scenarios.
