Atomic Mass Calculator

Enter the number of protons and neutrons to calculate the atomic mass

The atomic mass calculator quickly determines the atomic mass of an element along with its unit and chemical symbol. It provides an easy way to calculate the total mass of protons and neutrons present in an atom’s nucleus.

What is Atomic Mass?

Atomic mass refers to the total mass of an atom, primarily determined by the number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus. It is measured in atomic mass units (amu or u).

Although electrons are part of an atom, their mass is extremely small compared to protons and neutrons, so their contribution to atomic mass is usually negligible.

Atomic Mass Formula:

Atomic mass is commonly expressed in atomic mass units (u), also called Daltons (Da). One atomic mass unit is defined as 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. Therefore, 1 u ≈ \( 1.66 \times 10^{-27} \) kg.

Atomic mass number = Number of protons + Number of neutrons

OR

\( A = Z + N \)

Where:

  • A = mass number (total nucleons)
  • Z = number of protons (atomic number)
  • N = number of neutrons

Example:

Suppose an atom has:

Number of protons (Z) = 11

Number of neutrons (N) = 12

Solution:

A = Z + N

A = 11 + 12

A = 23

The atomic mass number of this element is 23 u. This corresponds to the isotope Sodium-23.

Why does an Atom Need a Neutron?

Neutrons are essential for maintaining nuclear stability. Since protons are positively charged, they repel each other due to electrostatic forces. Neutrons help reduce this repulsion by contributing to the strong nuclear force, which binds the nucleus together.

Without neutrons, most nuclei would be unstable and break apart. The right balance between protons and neutrons ensures atomic stability.

Steps To Use The Calculator:

The atomic mass calculator works as follows:

Input:

  • Enter the number of protons (Z)
  • Enter the number of neutrons (N)
  • Click on the "Calculate" button

Output:

  • Atomic mass number (A)
  • Atomic mass in atomic mass units (u)
  • Element name and symbol

This tool simplifies atomic mass calculations and provides instant, accurate results for students and professionals.
