The bowling score calculator helps you compute your score for each frame during a game. Enter the pins knocked down in each throw, and the tool will calculate your cumulative points and provide a full scorecard. You can also save results as bowling score sheets for convenience.
To calculate a total score for a standard 10-frame game, you need to understand the basic rules:
A strike occurs when all 10 pins are knocked down on the first roll of a frame. It is represented as X on the scorecard.
A spare occurs when all 10 pins are knocked down within two rolls of the same frame. It is represented as /.
An open frame is when fewer than 10 pins are knocked down after both rolls of the frame.
Example bowling game breakdown for clarity:
| Frame 1 | Frame 2 | Frame 3 | Frame 4 | Frame 5 | Frame 6 | Frame 7 | Frame 8 | Frame 9 | Frame 10 | HDCP | Max Score | |||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | 4 | 1 | - | X | 0 | 1 | 5 | 4 | - | X | 4 | 5 | 9 | / | 5 | 0 | X | X | X | 108 | 108 |
| 4 | 9 | 20 | 21 | 30 | 49 | 58 | 73 | 78 | 108 | |||||||||||||
1st throw: 1 pin, 2nd throw: 3 pins → Frame score = 4
1st throw: 4 pins, 2nd throw: 1 pin → Cumulative score = 4 + 5 = 9
Strike! Score = 10 + next two rolls (1 + 0) → Cumulative score = 9 + 11 = 20
1st throw: 1, 2nd throw: 0 → Cumulative = 20 + 1 = 21
1st throw: 5, 2nd throw: 4 → Cumulative = 21 + 9 = 30
Strike! Score = 10 + next two rolls (4 + 5) → Cumulative = 30 + 19 = 49
1st throw: 4, 2nd throw: 5 → Cumulative = 49 + 9 = 58
Spare! Score = 10 + next roll (5) → Cumulative = 58 + 15 = 73
1st throw: 5, 2nd throw: 0 → Cumulative = 73 + 5 = 78
Three Strikes! → Cumulative = 78 + 30 = 108
Handicap = 108
Max score possible = 108 (in this example game)
The perfect game consists of 12 strikes (first 9 frames + 3 strikes in the 10th frame), yielding a maximum possible score of 300 points.
