The cost basis calculator helps investors determine the stock cost basis, total shares owned, stock profit or loss, and profit percentage. Using this tool, stock traders can easily evaluate their investments using the average stock price method.

What is Stock Cost Basis?

The stock cost basis represents the original value of an investment for tax and accounting purposes. It includes the purchase price along with adjustments such as stock splits, dividends, and return-of-capital distributions. A stock cost basis calculator helps determine:

  • Initial purchase price
  • Acquisition-related costs
  • Capital improvements or adjustments
  • Depreciation (if applicable)
  • Associated fees and expenses

Formula for Stock Cost Basis

The average stock cost basis is calculated as:

Cost Basis = (P1 × Q1 + P2 × Q2 + ... + Pi × Qi) ÷ N

Where:

  • N = Total number of shares purchased (Q1 + Q2 + ... + Qi)
  • P1, P2, ..., Pi = Price of each batch of shares
  • Q1, Q2, ..., Qi = Quantity of shares in each batch

This method ensures accurate calculation of stock cost basis for tax reporting and financial analysis.

How to Calculate Stock Profit or Loss

Example: XYZ Company purchased 100 shares in two batches:

  • First 50 shares at $5,000 per share
  • Second 50 shares at $10,000 per share

The current market price per share is $10,000. Let's calculate the stock cost basis, profit, profit percentage, and total shares owned.

Step 1: Calculate Stock Cost Basis

Total Cost Basis = (50 × 5,000) + (50 × 10,000)

Total Cost Basis = 250,000 + 500,000 = 750,000

Step 2: Calculate Stock Profit

Stock Profit = (Current Value of Shares − Total Cost Basis)

Stock Profit = (100 × 10,000) − 750,000

Stock Profit = 1,000,000 − 750,000 = 250,000

Step 3: Calculate Profit Percentage

Profit Percentage = (Stock Profit ÷ Total Cost Basis) × 100

Profit Percentage = (250,000 ÷ 750,000) × 100 ≈ 33.33%

Step 4: Summary of Results

  • Stock Cost Basis: $750,000
  • Stock Profit: $250,000
  • Profit Percentage: Approximately 33.33%
  • Total Shares: 100
