Hemisphere Calculator

The hemisphere calculator helps you find various properties of a hemisphere from any one known variable. This online tool calculates values in terms of π (Pi) and allows you to determine variables based on:

  • Radius (r)
  • Total surface area (TSA or K)
  • Volume (V)
  • Curved surface area (CSA or A)
  • Base circumference (C)

Using this calculator, you can determine the volume, surface areas, and circumference of a hemisphere quickly and accurately.

Hemisphere Formulas

A hemisphere is half of a sphere, so its formulas are derived from sphere formulas divided accordingly:

  • Volume: V = (2/3)πr³
  • Curved surface area: A = 2πr²
  • Base area: B = πr²
  • Total surface area: K = 3πr²
  • Base circumference: C = 2πr

Manual Calculations

Given Volume (V), Find r, A, C, K

Formula for radius from volume:

r = ∛(3V / 2π)

Example: Volume V = 35 ft³

Solution:

r = ∛(3 × 35 / 2 × 3.14)
r = ∛(105 / 6.28)
r = ∛16.71
r ≈ 2.55 ft

Curved Surface Area: A = 2πr² ≈ 2 × 3.14 × (2.55)² ≈ 41.08 ft²
Total Surface Area: K = 3πr² ≈ 61.62 ft²
Base Circumference: C = 2πr ≈ 16.04 ft

Given Curved Surface Area (A), Find r, V, C, K

Formula for radius from curved surface area:

r = √(A / 2π)

Example: A = 46 ft²

Solution:

r = √(46 / 2 × 3.14) ≈ √7.32 ≈ 2.70 ft
V = (2/3)πr³ ≈ 41.49 ft³
C = 2πr ≈ 17 ft
K = 3πr² ≈ 69 ft²

Given Total Surface Area (K), Find r, V, A, C

Formula for radius from total surface area:

r = √(K / 3π)

Example: K = 85 ft²

Solution:

r = √(85 / 3 × 3.14) ≈ √9.02 ≈ 3 ft
V = (2/3)πr³ ≈ 56.71 ft³
A = 2πr² ≈ 56.62 ft²
C = 2πr ≈ 18.86 ft

Given Base Circumference (C), Find r, V, A, K

Formula for radius from circumference:

r = C / 2π

Example: C = 25 ft

Solution:

r = 25 / (2 × 3.14) ≈ 3.979 ft
V = (2/3)πr³ ≈ 131.94 ft³
A = 2πr² ≈ 99.47 ft²
K = 3πr² ≈ 149.22 ft²

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a hemisphere?

A hemisphere is half of a sphere created when a plane passes through the center. It includes the curved surface area and the base area. Its volume is half that of a sphere with the same radius.

What is the total surface area (TSA) of a sphere?

The total surface area of a sphere is: Surface Area = 4πr². It includes all external surfaces of the sphere.

How do you find the diameter of a hemisphere?

The diameter is simply: d = 2r, where r is the radius.

Why is it called a hemisphere?

The term "hemisphere" comes from the Greek prefix "hemi" meaning "half," referring to half of a sphere. The Earth, for example, is divided into Northern and Southern hemispheres.
