Our Perimeter Calculator allows you to quickly determine the perimeter of different geometric shapes. Whether it’s a square, rectangle, circle, or any polygon, this free tool provides accurate results in seconds.
Perimeter is the total distance around a shape. For polygons, it is the sum of all sides. For circular shapes, it is known as the circumference. The perimeter is measured in the same units as the lengths of the sides.
For simple polygons, just add the lengths of all sides. For circles or irregular shapes, use specific formulas. Below are formulas for common shapes:
A square has four equal sides:
.webp)
Formula: Perimeter = 4 × a
A rectangle has two pairs of equal sides:
.webp)
Formula: Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width)
Add the lengths of all three sides:

Formula: Perimeter = a + b + c
Also called the circumference:
.webp)
Formula: Perimeter = 2πr or πd
Half the circumference plus the diameter:

Formula: Perimeter = πr + 2r = πd / 2 + d
Arc length plus two radii:

Formula: Perimeter = r × (α + 2) [where α in radians]
Approximate using Ramanujan’s formula:

Formula: P ≈ π [3(a + b) - √((3a + b)(a + 3b))]
Sum of all four sides:
.webp)
Formula: Perimeter = a + b + c + d
Opposite sides are equal:

Formula: Perimeter = 2 × (a + b)
All four sides are equal:
.webp)
Formula: Perimeter = 4a
Two pairs of adjacent equal sides:

Formula: Perimeter = 2(a + b)
Sum of inner and outer circumferences:

Formula: Perimeter = 2πR + 2πr
All sides are equal:
.webp)
Formula: Perimeter = n × a (n = number of sides, a = side length)
Perimeter is the total distance around a shape, while area is the space enclosed within it. Perimeter units are linear, and area units are squared.
