What is a Scale Factor?

A scale factor is the ratio between corresponding sides of similar shapes, representing how much a figure is enlarged or reduced.

A shape increases in size when scaled by a factor greater than 1. The original shapes are called preimages. For example, diagram 'A' is enlarged by a scale factor of 2 to produce diagram 'B'.

How to Find a Scale Factor?

To calculate a scale factor:

Measure the dimension of the new shape (Scale Size).
Divide it by the corresponding dimension of the original shape (Real Size).

Scale Factor = Scale Size / Real Size

Using this formula, you can also find the scale size or real size if the other two values are known. Enter the known values into the calculator, and it will solve the missing measurement automatically.

Example 1:

Find the real length of an object with a scale length of 64 cm and a scale factor of 5:1 (in inches).

Solution:

Scale factor = 5:1 → 5/1
Scale length = 64 cm → convert to inches: 64 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 24.4 inches

Calculate the real length:

Real Length = Scale Factor × Scale Length = (5/1) × 24.4 ≈ 122 inches

Example 2:

If the original object is 15 inches and the scaled version is 5 inches:

Scale Factor = Original Size / New Size = 15 / 5 = 3

This indicates the new shape is 3 times smaller than the original.
