Online Scientific Notation Calculator

Our scientific notation calculator allows you to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers in scientific notation. You can also convert numbers between scientific notation, E notation, engineering notation, and decimal notation quickly and accurately.

About Scientific Notation

This calculator helps you work with very large or very small numbers efficiently. It supports calculations and conversions in the following formats:

  • Scientific Notation
  • E Notation
  • Engineering Notation
  • Decimal Notation

Scientific Notation

Scientific notation expresses numbers as a product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10. It is widely used in science and engineering to simplify extremely large or small numbers. The general form is:

\( N \times 10^n \)

Where \(N\) is a number between 1 and 10, and \(n\) is an integer exponent.

E-Notation

E-notation is a simplified version of scientific notation commonly used in calculators and computers. Numbers are written as "number E exponent". For example, 3.5 × 10⁴ is written as 3.5E4.

Engineering Notation

  • Similar to scientific notation, but the exponent is always a multiple of 3 (… -6, -3, 0, 3, 6 …).
  • Aligns with SI prefixes, making it convenient for engineering applications.

Decimal Notation

Decimal notation is the standard representation of numbers using digits 0–9 and a decimal point. To convert scientific notation to decimal, move the decimal point according to the exponent.

How to Use the Scientific Notation Calculator

Perform Calculations:

  • Go to the "Scientific Notation Calculator" tab.
  • Enter the first number in scientific notation format.
  • Select an operation (+, −, ×, ÷).
  • Enter the second number in the same format.
  • Click "Calculate" to get the result instantly.

Output: Results are displayed in:

  • Scientific Notation
  • E Notation
  • Engineering Notation
  • Decimal Notation

Convert Numbers Between Formats:

  • Go to the "Scientific Notation Converter" tab.
  • Enter a number in any format: Scientific, Decimal, or E notation.
  • Click "Calculate" to see the equivalent values in all other formats.

Example:

Convert 700 to scientific notation:

Step 1: Separate as 7 × 100

Step 2: Express 100 as a power of 10 → 100 = 10²

Result: 700 = 7 × 10²
