The height compression calculator measures the piston compression height, which is the distance from the piston pin center to the piston deck. This tool provides precise results in both inches and meters for accurate engine design.

What Is Piston Compression Height?

Piston compression height is the distance from the top surface of the piston to the center of the piston pin.

Also called piston pin height, this measurement is crucial for optimizing engine performance. A properly set compression height improves combustion efficiency and overall engine power, particularly at high RPMs.

How to Calculate Compression Height?

The compression height (CH) is the distance from the wrist pin center to the piston crown. Use the following formula for calculation:

Piston Compression Height = BH - (0.5 × CS) - RL - DC

Where:
  • CH – Compression Height
  • BH – Block Height
  • CS – Crank Stroke
  • RL – Connecting Rod Length
  • DC – Deck Clearance

Example Calculation:

Assume the block height is 6 inches, the crank stroke is 3 inches, the rod length is 1.5 inches, and the deck clearance is 2 inches. Calculate the piston compression height.

Solution:

CH = BH - 0.5 × CS - RL - DC

Substitute the values:

CH = 6 - 0.5 × 3 - 1.5 - 2

CH = 1 inch

CH = 0.0254 meters

So, the piston compression height is 1 inch (0.0254 m).

Key Piston Measurements:

When selecting pistons, three dimensions are essential:

  • Block Height (BH)
  • Connecting Rod Length (RL)
  • Crank Stroke (CS)

Block Height:

Block height is measured from the crankshaft centerline to the deck surface of the engine block. Accurate measurement is critical for calculating piston compression height.

Connecting Rod Length:

The connecting rod length is measured from the center of the big end to the center of the small end. This dimension is vital for compression height and overall engine geometry.

Stroke Length:

The stroke length is twice the distance from the crankshaft centerline to the crank throw. This measurement is key for piston travel and engine displacement.
