This building material calculator estimates the amount of material you need for a construction project. Enter a few parameters and get instant results along with total cost.
It quickly estimates the aggregate required, ensuring you neither overbuy nor underbuy for square or cubic yardage.
Using standard formulas, this calculator determines the quantities required. Here's a worked example:
Jackson wants to cover an area with concrete or gravel with the following dimensions:
Step 1: Calculate Area and Volume
Area = Length × Width = 58 × 45 = 2610 ft²
Volume = Area × Depth = 2610 × 2 = 5220 ft³
Step 2: Calculate Weight (using density)
Weight = Density × Volume = 105 lb/ft³ × 5220 ft³ = 548,100 lb
Convert pounds to tons: 548,100 ÷ 2000 ≈ 274 tons
Step 3: Calculate Total Cost
Cost = Price per Ton × Weight = 46 × 274 = $12,604
Weight per cubic yard/meter for common construction materials:
| Material | Weight per Cubic Yard (lbs) | Weight per Cubic Yard (tons) | Weight per Cubic Meter (kg) | Weight per Cubic Meter (metric tons) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gravel (¼” – 2’) | 2,800 – 3,400 | 1.4 – 1.7 | 1,660 – 2,020 | 1.66 – 2.02 |
| Rock (2’ – 6’) | 3,000 – 3,400 | 1.5 – 1.7 | 1,780 – 2,020 | 1.78 – 2.02 |
| Sand (wet) | 3,000 – 3,400 | 1.5 – 1.7 | 1,780 – 2,020 | 1.78 – 2.02 |
| Sand (dry) | 2,600 – 3,000 | 1.3 – 1.5 | 1,540 – 1,780 | 1.54 – 1.78 |
| Topsoil (wet) | 3,000 – 3,400 | 1.5 – 1.7 | 1,780 – 2,020 | 1.78 – 2.02 |
| Topsoil (dry) | 2,000 – 2,600 | 1 – 1.3 | 1,190 – 1,540 | 1.19 – 1.54 |
| Riprap | 3,400 – 4,000 | 1.7 – 2 | 2,020 – 2,370 | 2.02 – 2.37 |
