An online MPG calculator helps you determine a car’s fuel efficiency in miles per gallon. Planning a trip? This tool quickly shows how many miles per gallon your vehicle gets, saving you time and effort compared to manual calculations.

What is MPG (Miles Per Gallon)?

MPG (Miles Per Gallon) measures a car’s fuel efficiency. It shows how far a vehicle can travel per gallon of fuel—the higher the MPG, the more efficient the car. You can also check your vehicle’s fuel efficiency using our Gas Calculator.

How to Calculate MPG

Official fuel economy is usually based on WLTP testing (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure). Many modern vehicles display real-time MPG directly on the dashboard.

MPG Formula

Imperial system:

MPG = Distance traveled (miles) / Fuel consumed (gallons)

Metric system:

MPG = (Distance traveled in km ÷ Fuel consumed in litres) × 100

Example:

If a car returns 70 MPG with a 1-gallon tank, it can travel 70 miles before refueling.

Alternatively, using an online MPG calculator provides instant results.

Why Do Cars Have Multiple MPG Figures?

WLTP tests simulate different driving conditions (“phases”), each producing a separate MPG value. Typical phases include:

  • Low Speed: Urban driving (~35 mph / 56.5 km/h)
  • Medium Speed: Suburban (~48 mph / 76.6 km/h)
  • High Speed: Rural (~61 mph / 97.4 km/h)
  • Extra High Speed: Motorway (~82 mph / 131.3 km/h)
  • Combined: Average of all phases; usually the advertised figure.

Solved Example:

A car travels 14 km, uses 5 litres of fuel, fuel costs $60 per litre:

  • Convert fuel: 5 litres ≈ 1.32 gallons
  • Convert distance: 14 km ≈ 8.7 miles
  • MPG = Distance / Fuel = 8.7 ÷ 1.32 ≈ 6.6 MPG
  • Fuel cost per gallon = $60 × 3.785 ≈ $227.10 per gallon

How the MPG Calculator Works

The calculator is user-friendly and provides quick, accurate results.

Input:

  • Distance (km or miles)
  • Fuel used (litres or gallons)
  • Optional: Fuel price

Output:

  • Distance traveled
  • Fuel economy (MPG or L/100km)
  • Total fuel cost

FAQs – Miles Per Gallon (MPG)

What is a good MPG?

Generally, higher MPG indicates better fuel efficiency. Values vary by vehicle type.

Can driving style affect MPG?

Yes. Smooth driving improves MPG; aggressive acceleration and braking reduce it.

Is 42 MPG good?

Yes, it is considered efficient for most petrol cars.

Are 31 MPG good?

For older or non-hybrid vehicles, 31 MPG is acceptable.

What car has the best MPG?

Rank Make & Model Highway MPG
1 Honda Accord Hybrid EX 52
2 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE 53
3 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid SEL 51
4 Kia K5 LXS 52

Other MPG FAQs

  • Some modern hybrids reach 50–70 MPG under ideal conditions.
  • Ford ECOnetic Fiesta ≈ 65 MPG.
  • Vehicles below 23 MPG are considered low-efficiency.
  • Used cars with ≥35 MPG are considered good.

Conclusion

Understanding MPG is key for fuel costs and efficiency. Use our MPG Calculator to quickly determine fuel economy and trip costs.
