What Is Point Buy?

Point Buy is a method for creating ability scores in Dungeons & Dragons 5e. You allocate points to each ability score instead of rolling dice. You have 27 points to spend, and base scores start at 8 (min) and cannot exceed 15 before racial bonuses. This method gives full control over your character’s stats.

Standard Array vs Point Buy

The Standard Array is a pre-set set of numbers: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. Point Buy allows you to assign points manually using the 27-point pool for greater customization.

Calculating Ability Modifiers

Modifiers affect attacks, skills, and saving throws. To calculate:

Six Core Ability Scores

Strength (STR): Physical power and melee attacks.
