What Is Recessed Lighting?

Recessed lighting refers to light fixtures installed within the ceiling rather than hanging below it. A bulb mounted openly on the ceiling is not considered recessed lighting.

It is also called can lighting or pot lighting and is commonly used in both homes and commercial buildings.

Recessed Lighting Formulas:

The following formulas help determine the proper placement and spacing of recessed lights:

Outer Row Offset:
\(a_o = \frac{A}{2 \cdot r}\)

  • \(a_o\) = Distance of the first fixture from the edge of the ceiling (outer row)
  • A = Length of the ceiling
  • r = Total number of rows of lights

Row Spacing:
\(a_i = \frac{A}{r}\)

Outer Column Offset:
\(b_o = \frac{B}{2 \cdot c}\)

  • \(b_o\) = Distance from the first column to the side wall
  • B = Width of the room
  • c = Total number of columns

Column Spacing:
\(b_i = \frac{B}{c}\)

Centered Lighting (Vertical Offset):
Single or multiple centered lights:
\(y_o = y_i = \frac{A}{r}\)

Centered Lighting (Horizontal Offset):
Single or multiple centered lights:
\(x_o = x_i = \frac{B}{2}\)

How To Layout Recessed Lighting?

Follow these steps to arrange recessed lights properly:

  • Measure the room dimensions.
  • Determine the purpose of the lighting and the desired brightness for the room.
  • Create a rough sketch or layout on paper.
  • Choose a layout type, such as a grid or centered design.
  • Decide the number of lights per row and column.
  • Divide the length of each row by the number of lights to calculate spacing.
  • Mark the ceiling spots and install the lights accordingly.

Example:

Consider a rectangular living room:

  • Length = 10 feet
  • Width = 20 feet

You want 2 rows and 2 columns of lights, plus one centered light.

Solution:

Step 1: Determine the number of lights
Total lights = 2 rows × 2 columns + 1 center light = 5 lights.

\(b_i = \frac{Width}{Columns} = \frac{20}{2} = 10 \text{ feet}\)

Step 3: Row spacing

Step 4: Outer row offset
\(b_o = \frac{Width}{2 \cdot Columns} = \frac{20}{4} = 5 \text{ feet}\)

Step 5: Outer column offset
\(a_o = \frac{Length}{2 \cdot Rows} = \frac{10}{4} = 2.5 \text{ feet}\)

Step 6: Centered lighting offsets
Vertical offset: \(y_o = \frac{Length}{2} = 5 \text{ feet}\)
Horizontal offset: \(x_o = \frac{Width}{2} = 10 \text{ feet}\)
