What Is A Sonotube?

A sonotube is a cylindrical form made from heavy-duty cardboard or fiber, reinforced with spiral layers for strength. It is designed to shape concrete columns and posts, ensuring a perfect round form. Sonotubes are commonly used for decks, fences, patios, and other structural supports.

How To Calculate Concrete and Cost for Sonotubes?

You can calculate concrete requirements either using premixed concrete bags or by mixing your own concrete. Follow the steps below:

For Premixed Concrete:

  • Calculate the sonotube volume using the cylinder formula: Volume = π × r² × h.
  • Determine the total weight using the density of the concrete.
  • Find the number of bags required: Weight ÷ (Bag size × (1 - Waste %)).
  • Multiply by bag cost to get the total concrete cost.

For Mixing Your Own Concrete:

  • Calculate sonotube volume.
  • Adjust volume for waste: Total Volume = Volume × (1 + Waste %).
  • Determine the amount of cement, sand, and gravel based on the mix ratio (e.g., 1:2:3).
  • Calculate cost for each material: Volume × Unit Cost.
  • Add all costs for total concrete cost.

Practical Example:

Assume a sonotube of 100 inches height and 12 inches diameter. Concrete density is 6 cu ft, bag size is 12 kg at 15 Rs/bag, and waste is 5%.

Step 1: Calculate Volume

Radius = 12 ÷ 2 = 6 in

Volume = π × r² × h = 3.1416 × 6² × 100 = 11,310 cu in

Convert to cu ft: 11,310 × 0.0005787 ≈ 6.54 cu ft

Step 2: Premixed Concrete Bags

Weight = Density × Volume = 6 × 6.54 ≈ 39.24 lb

Convert to kg: 39.24 × 0.4536 ≈ 17.8 kg

Number of Bags = 17.8 ÷ (12 × 0.95) ≈ 2 bags

Total Cost = 2 × 15 Rs = 30 Rs

Step 3: Mixing Own Concrete

Waste Adjusted Volume = 6.54 × 1.05 ≈ 6.87 cu ft

Mix Ratio = 1:2:3 → Cement = 1/6 × 6.87 ≈ 1.15 cu ft, Sand = 2/6 × 6.87 ≈ 2.29 cu ft, Gravel = 3/6 × 6.87 ≈ 3.44 cu ft

Cost → Cement = 1.15 × 10 ≈ 11.5 Rs, Sand = 2.29 × 8 ≈ 18.32 Rs, Gravel = 3.44 × 6 ≈ 20.64 Rs

Total Cost = 11.5 + 18.32 + 20.64 ≈ 50.46 Rs

FAQ’s:

What Is A Sonotube Used For?

Sonotubes create perfectly round concrete columns for decks, patios, fences, and structural supports. They simplify the column-forming process and reduce labor.

What Sizes Are Available?

Diameters: 6” to 60”, Lengths: 4’ to 20’. Custom sizes may be available depending on the manufacturer.

Factors Affecting Load-Bearing Capacity?

  • Diameter of the sonotube
  • Height of the column
  • Concrete strength and mix ratio
