Instant AC BTU Calculator – Find the Perfect Cooling or Heating Capacity

Our AC BTU calculator makes it easy to determine the cooling and heating capacity needed for any room or space. Whether you’re installing a window AC, split AC, or central air system, this tool helps you quickly calculate the right BTU for optimal comfort. Say goodbye to guesswork and choose the correct air conditioner size in seconds!

What Is AC BTU?

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, which measures the amount of energy an air conditioner uses to remove heat from a space.

Simply put:

1 BTU is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1°F.

BTU is a critical factor in selecting the proper air conditioner. Choosing a unit with too few BTUs will lead to inefficient cooling, while an oversized AC may cycle too frequently and waste energy. Our calculator ensures you get the most accurate estimate for your space.

BTU Conversion Table

1 BTU Equals Equivalent Units
1055.06 Joules
1.05506 Kilojoules
252.164 Gram calories
0.252164 Kilocalories
0.293071 Watt-hours
0.000293071 Kilowatt-hours
778.169 Foot-pounds
1.002e-5 US Therms

How Many BTUs Do You Need?

If you know the area of your room or house, you can enter it into our AC BTU calculator to get the required capacity. Otherwise, a simple rule of thumb is:

20 BTU per square foot

For example, a room of 600 sq ft would require:

AC BTU Needed = 20 × 600
AC BTU Needed = 12,000

Important Rules

  • Not Too Big: Oversized ACs may overwork the PCB kit, causing frequent on/off cycles and potential damage.
  • Not Too Small: Underpowered ACs struggle to cool efficiently and consume extra energy.

Recommended AC Capacity by Room Size

Room Area (sq ft) Recommended AC Capacity (BTU/hr)
100-150 5000
150-250 6000
250-300 7000
300-350 8000
350-400 9000
400-450 10000
450-550 12000
550-700 14000
700-1000 18000
1000-1200 21000
1200-1400 23000
1400-1500 24000
1500-2000 30000
2000-2500 34000

Factors Affecting AC Size

  • Insulation & Room Layout: Wall materials and layout affect efficiency.
  • Ceiling Height: Taller ceilings require more BTUs; lower ceilings need less.
  • Sunlight: Rooms with direct sunlight require higher capacity.
  • Occupants: More people generate more heat.
  • Climate: Seasonal and local temperature changes influence AC needs.

How the AC BTU Calculator Works

  1. Select whether to calculate AC BTU or general heating/cooling BTU.
  2. Enter the room or house area.
  3. Choose climate, room type, and ceiling height.
  4. Click "Calculate" to see BTU requirements in various units.
