Wet Bulb Calculator

Use this wet bulb calculator to determine the wet bulb temperature and Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) for indoor and outdoor environments. It is an ideal tool for assessing heat stress, optimizing HVAC systems, and ensuring worker safety.

What Is Wet Bulb Temperature?

The wet bulb temperature measures the cooling effect of evaporation on the human body. It combines the effects of air temperature and humidity into a single value.

  • It is usually lower than the dry bulb temperature (air temperature).
  • At 100% humidity, the wet bulb temperature equals the dry bulb temperature.
  • As humidity decreases, the wet bulb temperature drops below the air temperature.

How Is It Measured?

Using a Psychrometer:

  • Dry bulb thermometer measures air temperature.
  • Wet bulb thermometer is compared with the dry bulb reading to determine wet bulb temperature.

DIY Method:

  • Wrap a water-soaked cloth around a thermometer bulb to measure wet bulb temperature.

Why Is It Important?

Wet bulb temperature indicates the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating. High wet bulb readings increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and hyperthermia.

Monitoring wet bulb temperature is critical in construction, agriculture, sports, and other high-temperature environments.

What Is the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT)?

WBGT measures heat stress, accounting for:

  • Air Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Radiant Heat (sunlight or heat sources)
  • Air Movement (wind or ventilation)

How to Calculate Wet Bulb Temperature

Required:

  • Dry Bulb Temperature (T) – standard air temperature
  • Relative Humidity (RH) – moisture content in air (%)

Formula:

Tw = T * arctan[0.152 * (RH + 8.3136)^(1/2)] + arctan(T + RH) - arctan(RH - 1.6763) + 0.00391838 * RH^(3/2) * arctan(0.0231 * RH) - 4.686

Where Tw = Wet Bulb Temperature

WBGT Formula

For outdoor conditions (with sunlight): WBGT = 0.7Tw + 0.2Tg + 0.1T

For indoor conditions: WBGT = 0.7Tw + 0.3T

Tg = Globe Temperature measured by a black globe thermometer.

Example Calculation

Given:

  • Dry Bulb Temp (DBT) = 40°C
  • Relative Humidity (RH) = 80%
  • Globe Temp (GT) = 35°C

Step 1: Calculate intermediate terms for Tw. After calculations, Tw ≈ 36.85°C.

Step 2: Calculate WBGT:

  • Outdoor WBGT = 0.7*36.85 + 0.2*35 + 0.1*40 ≈ 36.80°C
  • Indoor WBGT = 0.7*36.85 + 0.3*40 ≈ 37.80°C

Note: Wet bulb temperatures above 35°C (95°F) are dangerous and pose a high risk for heat-related illnesses.

Why Is WBGT Important?

  • Assess heat stress risk
  • Ensure workplace safety
  • Protect vulnerable populations
  • Optimize athletic performance

FAQs

Is Wet Bulb the same as Dew Point?

No. Wet bulb measures the air’s ability to cool via evaporation, while dew point measures actual moisture content.

Why is Wet Bulb Important in HVAC?

  • Evaporative cooling
  • Dehumidification
  • System performance & energy efficiency

How Long Can You Survive Extreme Wet Bulb Temperatures?

Survival depends on health, exertion, and cooling access. Prolonged exposure to wet bulb temperatures above 35°C is life-threatening.

How to Survive a Wet Bulb Event?

  • Seek immediate shade or air-conditioned space
  • Stay hydrated
  • Minimize physical activity
  • Cool the body with showers or cold compresses
  • Monitor vulnerable individuals
  • Seek emergency help if symptoms like dizziness or confusion occur
